Container ships – giants of the oceans
Container ships are getting bigger and bigger. They now carry far more than 8,000 containers and have a length of 340 metres. They are driven by the largest currently available diesel engines generating around 100,000 hp.
Since personnel costs can also be reduced, these mega-vessels operate very efficiently. The documentary shows the construction and testing of one of these giants and looks at the problems that have to be overcome in the technical development of such container ships. What does this development mean for ports and crews?
